Debate

UTD debate has been busy picking up awards this month as three different teams take home honors in October.

It began with the team of Anthony Ogbuli and Rolando Velasquez competing at the Kansas City Kansas CC Blue Devil Debates, held 10/11-10/13 where they ended with a record of 5-1 and reached the quarter final round.

The following weekend Jacob Loehr and Jacob Gonzalez put together a 4-3 record at the Las Vegas Classic at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, reaching the elimination debates as the 18th seed overall before falling in the eliminations to Fresno State.

Finally, the teams of Demarcus Powell & Daniel Becker and Kristyl Parker & Lesly Guitierrez travelled to Houston for the ‘Cougar Scrimmage’ where Daniel and Demarcus ended with a record of 3-1, good enough to take third overall. Lesly Gutierrez also finished as the third overall speaker in her division.

“It’s been a good month for us” said head coach Phil Samuels, adding “seeing so many of the teams excel points to the overall depth of the team.” Director of Debate Scott Herndon agreed saying “there’s a lot of talent on this team, when we really start clicking the ceiling is pretty high on what they can accomplish.”

UTD Debate next competes at the University of Central Oklahoma the first weekend in November and then closes out the season at Wake Forest University in mid-November.
